HISTORY
The Department of Ophthalmology traced back its origin in 1955 when it was known as the Department of EENT. The first chairman was Dr. Carlos L. Sevilla. He was ably supported by Drs. Ramon Ongsiako, Noe Legasto, Jose Chan, Leonida Monfero, Neva Arribas,Jose Valenzuela and Augusto Ongsiako. Dr. Jesus Tamesis later became the next chairmant and has served the department for 18 years. During that time, Dr. Tamesis organized MARIA (Medical Aid to Rural Indigent Areas) to help the less fortunate. It was also at this time that Dr.Tamesis became the President of WMA (World Medical Association). In 1982, Dr. Jesus Tamesis Sr. passed the chairmanship to Dr. Jose Velez. In 1986, to keep in tune with the times, the staff
decided to split the Department into two separate specialties of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Velez
stayed as chairman of Ophthalmology while Dr. Tomas Carvajal served as chairman of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery. Following Dr. Velez as chairman of the Department was Dr. Jose
Marin, Dr. Constantino Santos, Dr. Azora Capuchino. Dr. Santos was re-appointed on May 2004 up to the present. An important milestone in the Department is the establishment
of the Eye Center by the consultant staff to provide utmost care to
the visual needs of the populace around the vicinity of the hospital.
