This subject matter is given at the start of the course over a period of 14 hours. It is then follwed by a 10 hour lecture on nutrition which gives the student a working and basic knowledge of the nutrional requirements as well as the nutrional disorders commonly seen in the different pediatric age groups. The course is concluded with 6 hour lecture on preventive childhood illness and thus decrease infant morbidity and morality.

An outstanding feature of this course in Applied Pediatrics which is offered for 20 hours (4 hours / week for 5 weeks). This exposes the student to patients in pediatric service wards and emphasizes the importance of a complete and thorough history and physical examination in the diagnosis or pediatric illness. The first 3 hours of each week applied pediatrics in history taking, physical examination in which the faculty instructs and guides the students on the correct and proper technique. The fourth hour is conducted as small group case discussions in the classrooms. This is done in preparation for their clinical work during junior internship.

CLINICAL CLERKSHIP IN PEDIATRICS

The junior intern stays with department for a total of 2 months. One month is spent in FEU-NRMF Medical Center where they rotate in the pediatric ward for 2 weeks, in the neonatal ICU for 1 week and at the pediatric OPD for 1 week. One month is spent as an alternating rotation – 2 weeks at either Rizal Medical Center (RMC) or FEU-NRMF Medical Center Pediatric Pay Wards and 2 weeks at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) or National Children's Hospital (NCH).

The course emphasizes the taking of comprehensive histories and physical examination of patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedured are demonstrated both at the FEU-NRMF Medical Center and at NCH/RMC/JRRMMC. Differential diagnosis and management are discussed and explained to the junior interns.

Bedside and admission rounds along with mini-conferences are held daily conducted by both the faclty and residents. Evaluation of the history and PE as well as the application of laboratory and therapeutic procedures and management of the patient are tackeld in these daily rounds and mini-conferences. Social pediatrics is also emphasized so that the patient is discussed in relation to his family and environment. Department case conferences are conducted every Friday and Tuesday conference Schedule is as follows:
