OPHTHALMOLOGY
The main purpose of the course is to acquaint the students with diseases of the eye.  Stress is laid on the anatomy, physiology, methods of examination of the structures and pathology and symptoms of diseases of the eye.  The thorough discussion of management and treatment is deferred for the fourth year where more practical work will be done.  Slide projections accompany these discussions.

CLINICAL ROTATION
Fourth year medical clerks gain experience in history taking and data gathering, subjective and objective examination of patients in the OPD and Ward with the supervision of the residents assigned in the subspecialty.  The students are taught to pick up important points in history taking and perform ocular examinations.  By the end of the rotation they should be able to diagnose and manage common eye diseases and distinguish those that should be referred to the specialist.

The students are evaluated by oral and written examinations at the end of the stay in the department.  Their performance will be monitored by having each student submit an index card with the list of names of patients examined and the common diagnostic procedures performed.  They will also be asked to prepare cases for presentation and discussion and a journal report.
