PRINCIPLES OF SURGERY
It is during the second year that the students are introduced to the basic principles of surgery. The concepts learned in physiology, biochemistry, anatomy and pathology integrated in relation to the body’s response to trauma and surgical diseases. The concepts of systemic inflammatory response, fluid and electrolyte changes, acid base abnormalities, hemodynamic changes and immunology are re-emphasized and correlated to how it affects body homeostasis. Also basic trauma, infecton and oncologic principles are introduced which will govern the management of surgical patients.

SURGERY 3A and 3B
The goal of the undergraduate curriculum in surgery for the third year medical students is to train the students in preparation for their future roles as general practitioners, as resident trainee in different specialty fields as educators involved in the teaching of medicine and as researchers. At the end of the course in surgery, the medical student should be able to recognize and institute initial management of common surgical problems affecting both the adult and pediatric patients. The team-teaching approach  wherein a faculty will be assigned to lecture specific topics to all sections is the method of instruction. Surgery 3A covers general surgery and also utilizes PBL method of learning by the creation of preceptorial classes. Here, the students will be given specific cases for them to dissect, research on and then report and discuss. Surgery 3B consists of didactic lecture in surgical specialty topics and orientation sessions in preparation for the students future entry into clinical clerkship.

CLINICAL ROTATION

This new curriculum for Clinical Clerks is patterned after the Philippine College of Surgeons Undergraduate Surgical Curriculum. It calls for an integrated approach to medical education with more emphasis on problem-based work and less emphasis on volume of information. The student is encouraged to be more independent, autonomous and reflective than is usually the case in more traditional learning settings. We started with the basic concepts and principles of surgery and basic skills in the second year, proceeded to principles and treatment in the third year culminating with patient care, application of the concepts and principles learned during the clinical clerkship.
