FEU-NRMF is the only Level 3 university hospital situated in District 5, Quezon City.  It is committed to develop health care professionals capable of providing the best patient care possible.

The FEU-NRMF Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratory is a tertiary hospital-based laboratory located in the upper ground floor of the hospital building.  It has a license to operate from the Department of Health (DOH) and is accredited by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Philippine Society of Pathologists (PSP) to conduct training on Medical Technology and Pathology Residency Training Program.

The Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratory is licensed to operate granted by the Department of Health (DOH) as a tertiary hospital-based laboratory composed of the following sections:  Pre-Analytic, Clinical Chemistry, Serology, Histopathology, Clinical Microscopy, Blood Banking, Bacteriology, Hematology, and Drug Testing Laboratory.  A highly competent and thorough team of pathologists, medical technologists and drug test analysts using top-of-the-line laboratory equipment ensures the fast and reliable delivery of laboratory examinations. Aside from the top-of-the-line equipment, the Department of Clinical Laboratory has a Laboratory Information System (LIS), a class of software that receives, processes, and stores information generated by medical laboratory processes. These system is interface with instruments and other information systems such as Hospital Information System (HIS).

As partners of clinicians, the department upholds its goal to produce accurate, reliable, and timely test results to aid in the prompt diagnosis of patients.  STAT turn-around-time, as early as within thirty (30) minutes; routine within two (2) hours.

•    Anatomic Pathology (AP)
o    Frozen section service for rapid intra-operative rapid diagnosis
o    Surgical Pathology provides gross examination and histologic interpretation of tissue biopsy
o    Autopsy / Post-mortem examination to confirm clinical diagnosis and serve as teaching material for students and resident physicians.
o    Cytopathology which renders diagnosis on cells spontaneously exfoliated or removed via procedures like fine needle aspiration biopsy.

•    Clinical Pathology (CP)

Blood Bank

  • Blood Bank performs collection and testing of blood from voluntary donors, pre-transfusion compatibility testing and distribution of blood and blood products. Additional capabilities include:
  • Leucoreduction techniques
  • ABO Rh typing using gel methodology
  • Antibody screening methods
  • Therapeutic Phlebotomy
  • Apheresis Donation

Procedures are also in place to conduct transfusion reaction investigation. Existing Memorandum of Agreement is in place with the blood centers of the Philippines to ensure adequacy of blood supply.
Donor acceptance is daily from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.  We also accommodate donors on Sundays and holidays by appointment.  Picture ID is required for all potential blood donors.

Bacteriology provides results as to the infectious cause of disease by examination such as:

  • KOH
  • NSS/Wet Smear
  • AFB
  • GeneXpert Testing
  • India ink
  • Gram’s Stain
  • Culture and sensitivity testing of isolates

Clinical Chemistry
Chemistry analyzes blood sample to detect the presence of metabolic problems, endocrine diseases, infectious etiology and even neoplastic growth.  It offers testing such as:

Lipid profile ( Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL, VLDL and LDL)

Kidney function test

  • Creatinine
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen
  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
  • 24-hour Creatinine Clearance

Liver function test

  • Alanine transaminase (ALT)
  • Aspartate transaminase (AST)
  • Alkaline phosphatase
  • Albumin
  • Bilirubin
  • Gamma- glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT)

Clinical Microscopy
Clinical Microscopy section performs scientific analysis of non-blood body fluids such as urine, stool and other body fluids for the examination of:Urinalysis

  • Pregnancy Test
  • Micral (Semi-Quantitative)
  • Seminalysis
  • Fecalysis
  • Concentration Technique
  • Occult Blood Determination
  • Scotch Tape Method
  • Body fluids cell count and differential count

Hematology performs a wide range of test examinations from basic blood cell count to routine. The full Blood Count is performed on our automated hematology analyzer which provides information on the quantity and quality of platelets, red and white blood cells. These will aids in the diagnosis of conditions such as anemia, thalassemia, leukemia and infections, particularly Dengue. Selected film with significant abnormal results or blood film finding based on the results obtained and clinical history of the patient, a blood film is made and reviewed under microscope for final reporting
Examinations under this section includes the following:

  • Complete blood count
  • Reticulocyte count
  • Malarial smear reading
  • Estimated Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
  • Coagulation studies
    • Protime (PT)
    • Activated Partial Prothombin Time (aPTT)
    • Bleeding/Clotting Time
  • Bone Marrow Aspirates (BMA)
  • Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS)

Serology/ Immunology
Serology performs infectious disease testing such as:

  • Hepatitis profile
    • HbsAg
    • Anti-HBs
    • Anti-HBc (IgM)
    • HBeAg
    • Anti-HBe
    • Anti-HCV
    • Anti-HAV (IgM)
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • RPR
  • Salmonella
  • Leptospiral testing

Drug Testing
Located in upper ground level in Institute of Medicine building with a certification from the Department of Health- IDTOMIS to screen urine sample for Metamphetamine (MET) and Cannabinoids (Thc).

To ensure continuous service to our patients, other tests not available in our laboratory are catered by our partner institution through the provision of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). The Department of Pathology and Clinical laboratory aims to bring a vast array of diagnostic and confirmatory examinations to our patients, such are the following tests:

Anatomic Pathology
