MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY
This subject cover the fundamental topics in Microbiology, including immunology. It includes the general principles of infection and immunity, sterilization and disinfection, antimicrobial agents and bacterial and viral genetics. The study of each microorganism(i.e. bacteria, viruses and fungi) will deal mainly on morphology, antigenic structure, determinants of pathogenecity, modes of transmission, pathogenesis, prominent signs and symptoms, laboratory diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Emphasis is given on microorganisms that are found in the Philippines.
Laboratory exercises allow the students to do staining techniques and sterilization procedures, to study important bacteria from pure stock culture and from actual clinical specimens by inoculation of appropriate media and biochemical tests, and to do antimicrobial susceptibility test. The students also study some pathogenic fungi based on colony and microscopic morphology.
Teaching methods include lectures, demonstration, laboratory exercises, conference and independent studies. Evaluation is based on preliminary examinations, platings(announced quizzes), unknowns, laboratory conference, practical examinations and final examination.

MEDICAL PARASITOLOGY
Medical Parasitology includes Protozoology and Helminthology. The students are providedstructional learning objectives of the course, which include the basic knowledge of important parasites of man, their morphology, life cycle and diseases produced. The pathogenic parasites are discussed with clnicopathologic correlation. Diagnosis is taken with emphasis in specimen and laboratory procedures. Treatment, prevention and control of infection are also included in the course.

Teaching methods include lectures, demonstration, independent studies, laboratory work(microscopic and macroscopic) and occasional small group discussions. The students are evaluated based on preliminary examinations, unknowns, quizzes, laboratory conference and practical examinations.
